RESUMO

Photothermal catalysis exhibits promising prospects to overcome the shortcomings of high-energy consumption of traditional thermal catalysis and the low efficiency of photocatalysis. However, there is still a challenge to develop catalysts with outstanding light absorption capability and photothermal conversion efficiency for the degradation of atmospheric pollutants. Herein, we introduced the Co3O4 layer and Pt nanoclusters into the three-dimensional (3D) porous membrane through the atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique, leading to a Pt/Co3O4/AAO monolithic catalyst. The 3D ordered nanochannel structure can significantly enhance the solar absorption capacity through the light-trapping effect. Therefore, the embedded Pt/Co3O4 catalyst can be rapidly heated and the O2 adsorbed on the Pt clusters can be activated to generate sufficient O2- species, exhibiting outstanding activity for the diverse VOCs (toluene, acetone, and formaldehyde) degradation. Optical characterization and simulation calculation confirmed that Pt/Co3O4/AAO exhibited state-of-the-art light absorption and a notable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectrometry (in situ DRIFTS) studies demonstrated that light irradiation can accelerate the conversion of intermediates during toluene and acetone oxidation, thereby inhibiting byproduct accumulation. Our finding extends the application of AAO's optical properties in photothermal catalytic degradation of air pollutants.

RESUMO

The development of catalysts with abundant active interfaces for superior low-temperature catalytic CO oxidation is critical to meet increasingly rigorous emission requirements, yet still challenging. Herein, this work reports a PtCo/CoOx /Al2 O3 catalyst with PtCo clusters and enriched Pt─O─Co interfaces induced by hydrogen spillover from the Pt sites and self-oxidation process in air, exhibiting excellent performance for CO oxidation at low temperatures and humid conditions. The combination of structural characterizations and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy reveals that the PtCo cluster effectively prevents CO saturation/poisoning on the Pt surface. Additionally, the presence of Pt─O─Co interfaces in the PtCo/CoOx /Al2 O3 catalyst provides a significant number of active sites for oxygen activation and ─OH formation. This facilitates efficient generation of CO2 at ambient temperature by coupling with nearby adsorbed CO molecules, resulting in superior low-temperature activity and long-term stability for CO oxidation under humid conditions. This work provides a facile route toward rationalizing the design of catalysts with more active interfaces for superior low-temperature CO oxidation under humid conditions for practical applications.

RESUMO

Solar-driven water splitting powered by photovoltaics enables efficient storage of solar energy in the form of hydrogen fuel. In this work, we demonstrate efficient solar-to-hydrogen conversion using perovskite (PVK) tandem photovoltaics and a halogen-modulated metal-organic framework (MOF) electrocatalyst. By substituting tetrafluoroterephthalate (TFBDC) for terephthalic (BDC) ligands in a nickel-based MOF, we achieve a 152 mV improvement in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) overpotential at 10 mA·cm2. Through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray adsorption structure (XAS) analysis, theoretical simulation, and electrochemical results, we demonstrated that the introduction of fluorine atoms enhanced the intrinsic activity of Ni sites as well as the transfer property and accessibility of the MOF. Using this electrocatalyst in a bias-free photovoltaic electrochemical (PV-EC) system with a PVK/organic tandem solar cell, we achieve 6.75% solar-to-hydrogen efficiency (ηSTH). We also paired the electrocatalyst with a PVK photovoltaic module to drive water splitting at 206.7 mA with ηSTH of 10.17%.

RESUMO

Metal-organic framework (MOF) solids with their variable functionalities are relevant for energy conversion technologies. However, the development of electroactive and stable MOFs for electrocatalysis still faces challenges. Here, a molecularly engineered MOF system featuring a 2D coordination network based on mercaptan-metal links (e.g., nickel, as for Ni(DMBD)-MOF) is designed. The crystal structure is solved from microcrystals by a continuous-rotation electron diffraction (cRED) technique. Computational results indicate a metallic electronic structure of Ni(DMBD)-MOF due to the Ni-S coordination, highlighting the effective design of the thiol ligand for enhancing electroconductivity. Additionally, both experimental and theoretical studies indicate that (DMBD)-MOF offers advantages in the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) over non-thiol (e.g., 1,4-benzene dicarboxylic acid) analog (BDC)-MOF, because it poses fewer energy barriers during the rate-limiting *O intermediate formation step. Iron-substituted NiFe(DMBD)-MOF achieves a current density of 100 mA cm-2 at a small overpotential of 280 mV, indicating a new MOF platform for efficient OER catalysis.

RESUMO

Enhancing oxygen activation through defect engineering is an effective strategy for boosting catalytic oxidation performance. Herein, we demonstrate that quenching is an effective strategy for preparing defect-rich Pt/metal oxide catalysts with superior catalytic oxidation activity. As a proof of concept, quenching of α-Fe2O3 in aqueous Pt(NO3)2 solution yielded a catalyst containing Pt single atoms and clusters over defect-rich α-Fe2O3 (Pt/Fe2O3-Q), which possessed state-of-the-art activity for toluene oxidation. Structural and spectroscopic analyses established that the quenching process created abundant lattice defects and lattice dislocations in the α-Fe2O3 support, and stronger electronic interactions between Pt species and Fe2O3 promote the generation of higher oxidation Pt species to modulate the adsorption/desorption behavior of reactants. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (in situ DRIFTS) characterization studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations determined that molecular oxygen and Fe2O3 lattice oxygen were both activated on the Pt/Fe2O3-Q catalyst. Pt/CoMn2O4, Pt/MnO2, and Pt/LaFeO3 catalysts synthesized by the quenching method also offered superior catalytic activity for toluene oxidation. Results encourage the wider use of quenching for the preparation of highly active oxidation catalysts.

RESUMO

Electrochemical production of H2O2 is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to the anthraquinone-based processes. Metal-doped carbon-based catalysts are commonly used for 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e-ORR) due to their high selectivity. However, the exact roles of metals and carbon defects on ORR catalysts for H2O2 production remain unclear. Herein, by varying the Co loading in the pyrolysis precursor, a Co-N/O-C catalyst with Faradaic efficiency greater than 90% in alkaline electrolyte was obtained. Detailed studies revealed that the active sites in the Co-N/O-C catalysts for 2e-ORR were carbon atoms in C-O-C groups at defect sites. The direct contribution of cobalt single atom sites and metallic Co for the 2e-ORR performance was negligible. However, Co plays an important role in the pyrolytic synthesis of a catalyst by catalyzing carbon graphitization, tuning the formation of defects and oxygen functional groups, and controlling O and N concentrations, thereby indirectly enhancing 2e-ORR performance.

RESUMO

Carbon@titania yolk-shell nanostructures are successfully synthesized at different calcination conditions. These unique structure nanomaterials can be used as a photocatalyst to degrade the emerging water pollutant, acetaminophen (paracetamol). The photodegradation analysis studies have shown that the samples with residual carbon nanospheres have improved the photocatalytic efficiency. The local electronic and atomic structure of the nanostructures are analyzed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. The spectra confirm that the hollow shell has an anatase phase structure, slight lattice distortion, and variation in Ti 3d orbital orientation. In situ XAS measurements reveal that the existence of amorphous carbon nanospheres inside the nano spherical shell inhibit the recombination of electron-hole pairs; more mobile holes are formed in the p-d hybridized bands near the Fermi surface and enables the acceleration of the carries that significantly enhance the photodegradation of paracetamol under UV-visible irradiation. The observed charge transfer process from TiO2  hybridized orbital to the carbon nanospheres reduces the recombination rate of electrons and holes, thus increasing the photocatalytic efficiency.

RESUMO

Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) has attracted substantial attention on account of its usefulness in producing hydrogen by photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. The exploitation of BiVO4 for this purpose is yet limited by severe charge recombination in the bulk of BiVO4, which is caused by the short diffusion length of the photoexcited charge carriers and inefficient charge separation. Enormous effort has been made to improve the photocurrent density and solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of BiVO4. This study demonstrates that modulating the composition of the electrode and the electronic configuration of BiVO4 by decoration with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) is effective in not only enhancing the charge carrier concentration but also suppressing charge recombination in the solar water splitting process. Decoration with a small number of Ag NPs significantly enhances the photocurrent density of BiVO4 to an extent that increases with the concentration of the Ag NPs. At 0.5% Ag NPs, the photocurrent density approaches 4.1 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) under solar simulated light illumination; this value is much higher than the 2.3 mA cm-2 of pure BiVO4 under the same conditions. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is utilized to investigate the electronic structure of pure BiVO4 and its modification by decoration with Ag NPs. Analytical results indicate that increased distortion of the VO4 tetrahedra alters the V 3d-O 2p hybridized states. Additionally, as the Ag concentration increases, the oxygen vacancy defects that act as recombination centers in BiVO4 are reduced. In situ XAS, which is conducted under dark and solar illumination conditions, reveals that the significantly enhanced PEC performance is attributable to the synergy of modulated atomic/electronic structures and the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of the Ag nanoparticles.

RESUMO

In certain metalloenzymes, multimetal centers with appropriate primary/secondary coordination environments allow carbon-carbon coupling reactions to occur efficiently and with high selectivity. This same function is seldom realized in molecular electrocatalysts. Herein we synthesized rod-shaped nanocatalysts with multiple copper centers through the molecular assembly of a triphenylphosphine copper complex (CuPPh). The assembled molecular CuPPh catalyst demonstrated excellent electrochemical CO2 fixation performance in aqueous solution, yielding high-value C2+ hydrocarbons (ethene) and oxygenates (ethanol) as the main products. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and quasi-in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and reaction intermediate capture, we established that the excellent catalytic performance originated from the large number of double copper centers in the rod-shaped assemblies. Cu-Cu distances in the absence of CO2 were as long as 7.9 Å, decreasing substantially after binding CO2 molecules indicating dynamic and cooperative function. The double copper centers were shown to promote carbon-carbon coupling via a CO2 transfer-coupling mechanism involving an oxalate (OOC-COO) intermediate, allowing the efficient production of C2+ products. The assembled CuPPh nanorods showed high activity, excellent stability, and a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) to C2+ products (65.4%), with performance comparable to state-of-the-art copper oxide-based catalysts. To our knowledge, our findings demonstrate that harnessing metalloenzyme-like properties in molecularly assembled catalysts can greatly improve the selectivity of CO2RR, promoting the rational design of improved CO2 reduction catalysts.

RESUMO

Defect engineering is an important means of improving the electrochemical performance of the Co3O4 electrocatalyst in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, operando soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (SXAS) is used to explore the electronic structure of Co3O4 under OER for the first time. The defect-rich Co3O4 (D-Co3O4) has a Co2.45+ state with Co2+ at both octahedral (Oh) and tetrahedral (Td) sites and Co3+ at Oh, whereas Co3O4 has Co2.6+ with Co2+ and Co3+ at Td and Oh sites, respectively. SXAS reveals that upon increasing the voltage, the Co2+ in D-Co3O4 is converted to low-spin Co3+, some of which is further converted to low-spin Co4+; most Co2+ in Co3O4 is converted to Co3+ but rarely to Co4+. When the voltage is switched off, Co4+ intermediates quickly disappear. These findings reveal Co(Oh) in D-Co3O4 can be rapidly converted to active low-spin Co4+ under operando conditions, which cannot be observed by ex situ XAS.

RESUMO

In the present decade, owing to half-metallic ferromagnetism, controlled 3d transition metal-doping based defect engineering in oxide perovskites attracts considerable attention in the pursuit of spintronics. We aim to investigate the electronic structure of Co-doped barium strontium titanate (Ba0.8Sr0.2CoxTi1-xO3 where x = 0, 0.1, 0.2) solid solution. Structural, vibrational and microscopic properties indicate the cationic substitution of Co at the octahedral Ti position along with a displacive kind of tetragonal-to-cubic phase transformation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy evidences the reduction in the valence state from Co3+ to Co2+ and Ti K edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy endorses the higher lattice symmetry with increasing Co doping. Orbital hybridization triggered electron hopping between O 2p and Co eg orbitals results in a spin fluctuation from the occupation t62ge0g for x = 0.1 to the occupation t62ge1gL for x = 0.20 (L designates a hole in the O 2p shell) aligned state observed from density functional theory calculations. The dominating crystal field energy as compared to intra-atomic exchange (Hund) energy decides the spin-orbital degeneracy for the Co 3d orbital to induce spin fluctuations.

RESUMO

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial to electrochemical hydrogen production. However, designing and fabricating efficient electrocatalysts still remains challenging. By confinedly coordinating organic ligands with metal species in layered double hydroxides (LDHs), an innovative LDHs-assisted approach is developed to facilely synthesize freestanding bimetallic 2D metal-organic framework nanosheets (2D MOF NSs), preserving the metallic components and activities in OER. Furthermore, the research has demonstrated that the incorporation of carboxyl organic ligands coordinated with metal atoms as proton transfer mediators endow 2D MOF NSs with efficient proton transfer during the electrochemical OHads  â†’ Oads transition. These freestanding NiFe-2D MOF NSs require a small overpotential of 260 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm-2 . When this strategy is applied to LDH nanosheets grown on nickel foam, the overpotential can be reduced to 221 mV. This outstanding OER activity supports the capability of multimetallic organic frameworks for the rational design of water oxidation electrocatalysts. This strategy provides a universal path to the synthesis of 2D MOF NSs that can be used as electrocatalysts directly.

RESUMO

The Jahn-Teller effect (JTE) is one of the most important determinators of how much stress layered cathode materials undergo during charge and discharge; however, many reports have shown that traces of superstructure exist in pristine layered materials and irreversible phase transitions occur even after eliminating the JTE. A careful consideration of the energy of cationic distortion using a Taylor expansion indicated that second-order JTE (pseudo-JTE) is more widespread than the aforementioned JTE because of the various bonding states that occur between bonding and antibonding molecular orbitals in transition-metal octahedra. As a model case, a P2-type Mn-rich cathode (Na3/4MnO2) was investigated in detail. MnO6 octahedra are well known to undergo either elongation or contraction in a specific direction due to JTE. Here, the substitution of Li for Mn (Na3/4(Li1/4Mn3/4)O2) helped to oxidize Mn3+ to Mn4+ suppressing JTE; however, the MnO6 octahedra remained asymmetric with a clear trace of the superstructure. With various advanced analyses, we disclose the pseudo-JTE as a general reason for the asymmetric distortions of the MnO6 octahedra. These distortions lead to the significant electrochemical degradation of Na3/4Li1/4Mn3/4O2. The suppression of the pseudo-JTE modulates phase transition behaviors during Na intercalation/deintercalation and thereby improves all of the electrochemical properties. The insight obtained by coupling a theoretical background for the pseudo-JTE with verified layered cathode material lattice changes implies that many previous approaches can be rationalized by regulating pseudo-JTE. This suggests that the pseudo-JTE should be thought more important than the well-known JTE for layered cathode materials.

RESUMO

In the electrochemical water splitting process, integrating hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the same electrolyte with the same catalyst is highly beneficial for increasing the energy efficiency and reducing the fabrication cost. However, most OER catalysts are unstable in the acidic solution, while HER shows poor kinetics in the alkaline solution, which hinders the scale-up application of electro-catalytic water splitting. In this work, a CoP/Co3O4 heterostructure is firstly fabricated and then O and P defects are introduced via surface engineering (s-CoP/Co3O4). The as-prepared material was employed as the catalyst towards electrochemical water splitting in an alkaline environment. In alkaline HER, a current density of -10 mA cm-2 can be achieved at an overpotential of 106 mV vs. RHE. In the OER process, the overpotential of s-CoP/Co3O4 electrode is only 211 mV vs. RHE at 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH, and the corresponding Tafel slope is only 58.4 mV dec-1 so that the s-CoP/Co3O4 electrode could be used as the bifunctional catalyst for alkaline water splitting. This work provides a simple and low-cost approach to fabricate a Co-based heterojunction electrode with unsaturated metal sites to improve the electro-catalytic activities towards water splitting.

RESUMO

Highly delithiated LiCoO2 has high specific capacity (>200 mAh g-1); however, its degradation behavior causes it to have poor electrochemical performance and thermal instability. The degradation of highly delithiated LiCoO2 is mainly induced by oxygen vacancy migration and weakening of oxygen-related interactions, which result in pitting corrosion and fault formation on the surface. In this research, a coupling agent, namely, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), was grafted onto the surface of LiCoO2 to form a cross-linking structure. Through the aza-Michael addition reaction, an oligomer formed from barbituric acid and bisphenol a diglycidyl ether diacrylate were reacted with the cross-linking APTES to form an artificial cathode electrolyte interphase (ACEI). The highly delithiated LiCoO2 containing the ACEI had considerably less degradation on the surface of the bulk material caused by oxygen release. The formation of the O1 phase was prevented in high delithiation and high-temperature operations. This research revealed that the ACEI reinforced the Co-O bond, which is crucial in preventing gas evolution and O1 phase formation. In addition, the ACEI prevents direct contact between the electrolyte and highly active surface of LiCoO2, thereby preventing the formation of a thick and high impedance traditional cathode electrolyte interphase. According to the present results, highly delithiated LiCoO2 containing the ACEI exhibited outstanding cycle retention and capacity at 55 °C as well as low heat capacity release in the fully delithiated state. The ACEI considerably protected and maintained the electrochemical performance of highly delithiated LiCoO2, which is suitable for high-energy-density applications, such as electric vehicles and power tools.

RESUMO

The Taiwan Photon Source (TPS) with high brightness and energy tunability is suitable for applications in spectroscopy. The tender X-ray absorption beamline will be optimized for X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements using a bending-magnet source in a unique photon energy range (1.7-10 keV) and two crystal pairs [InSb(111) and Si(111)] separated using back-to-back double-crystal monochromators (DCMs). InSb crystals are typically used in the lower photon energy range of 1.7-3.5 keV. However, the poor thermal conductivity of InSb crystals leads to severe deformation. This factor should be considered when the monochromator is installed on a tender X-ray beamline in a storage ring with a high power density. There are many approaches to reducing the thermal load on the first crystal of a DCM. Double-bounce high harmonics rejection mirrors in front of the DCM serve not only to reduce the high-order harmonics but also to absorb considerable quantities of heat. Two coating stripes on the silicon surfaces with a variable incident angle will be key to solving the thermal load on this beamline.

RESUMO

We report the stimulating effects of interfacial charge transfer process between spherical Ag nanoparticles and shuttlecock-shaped ZnO nanostructures observed by UV-visible spectroscopy and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In specific, ZnO nanorods and shuttlecock-shaped ZnO/Ag nanostructures were developed using a simple chemical colloidal method and characterized for structural variations using XRD. The observed red shift in plasmonic peak and the increase in Urbach energy signify interfacial interactions and increased randomness in the hybrid ZnO/Ag nanostructures. Simultaneously, the enhanced intensity of deep-level emission in the ZnO/Ag hybrid suggests the increased recombination rate of electron-hole pairs. The red and blue emissions evolving with temperature subsequently suggests the presence of oxygen vacancies or zinc interstitials in the system. The decrease in intensities and emerging features in O K-edge and Zn L-edge indicates the charge transfer from Ag to ZnO at the interface of ZnO/Ag hybrids. Moreover, the differences in absorption edges with alternating light on/off conditions were analyzed for the exploitation of this ZnO-based system in various applications.

RESUMO

Trace doping is an efficient way to improve the stability of nickel-rich layered cathodes for lithium-ion batteries, but the structural origin of such improvement, rather than a simple replacement, has been rarely explored. Herein, Ga dopants have been introduced into a nickel-rich host, LiNi0.9Co0.1O2, by a combination of coprecipitation and the solid-state sintering method. Structural analyses based on high-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction data and X-ray absorption spectra suggest that Ga preferentially sits in the NiO6 slabs, resulting in reduced Ni/Li cationic mixing and depressed lattice vibration. Due to the smaller dissociation energy of Ga-O bonds, some Ga3+ cations migrate first toward Li layers upon delithiation and form the GaO4 tetrahedral symmetry irreversibly during the electrochemical process, which acts as a pillar in the subsequent electrochemical processes. As a result, the doped material exhibits both improved cycling performance and rate capability under a high operating voltage (4.5 V) due to the stabilized structure in the lithiation/delithiation process. This study illustrates how a dopant enhances the electrochemical stability in views of both pristine and charged structure and suggests that a positive effect is expected from the dopant favoring the tetrahedral symmetry (e.g., Al).

RESUMO

Ni-rich high-energy-density lithium ion batteries pose great risks to safety due to internal short circuits and overcharging; they also have poor performance because of cation mixing and disordering problems. For Ni-rich layered cathodes, these factors cause gas evolution, the formation of side products, and life cycle decay. In this study, a new cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) for Ni2+ self-oxidation is developed. By using a branched oligomer electrode additive, the new CEI is formed and prevents the reduction of Ni3+ to Ni2+ on the surface of Ni-rich layered cathode; this maintains the layered structure and the cation mixing during cycling. In addition, this new CEI ensures the stability of Ni4+ that is formed at 100% state of charge in the crystal lattice at high temperature (660 K); this prevents the rock-salt formation and the over-reduction of Ni4+ to Ni2+. These findings are obtained using in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, operando X-ray diffraction, operando gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the new CEI has an elliptical shape on the material surface, which is approximately 100 nm in length and 50 nm in width, and covers selected particle surfaces. After the new CEI was formed on the surface, the Ni2+ self-oxidation gradually affects from the surface to the bulk of the material. It found that the bond energy and bond length of the Ni-O are stabilized, which dramatically inhibit gas evolution. The new CEI is successfully applied in a Ni-rich layered compound, and the 18650- and the punch-type full cells are fabricated. The energy density of the designed cells is up to 300 Wh/kg. Internal short circuit and overcharging safety tests are passed when using the standard regulations of commercial evaluation. This new CEI technology is ready and planned for future applications in electric vehicle and energy storage.
